Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Bárcena to address the migration crisis. They agreed to organize a joint visit to Darién.

"Mexico and the United States agreed to carry out a joint visit to Darién, together with Panama, to understand how the migration phenomenon is occurring from that region. In addition, they will seek to meet with the government of Guatemala to explore the best ways to strengthen our cooperation," the Mexican Foreign Ministry explained on its official website.

Mexico insisted that it is necessary to join other countries in the region to transform the migration phenomenon. He claimed that, in his opinion, an immigration system should be promoted "that is safe, regular, orderly and, above all, humane." In that sense, he highlighted what Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been doing: "In terms of collaboration with the rest of the hemisphere, the Mexican delegation highlighted the great effort we have initiated to address the root causes of migration. In particular, the development program in which they will invest 180 million dollars to support Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti."

Mexico also criticized Governor Greg Abbott for promoting immigration policies that seek to defend the security of the state. "Mexico reiterated its firm rejection of the measures that the governor of Texas is implementing at the border, with fatal effects on migrants. The collaboration agreed to modernize the Otay II border crossing was also highlighted, as well as the need to continue working on it for its prompt entry into operation," the Foreign Ministry said.

Despite the announcements, the crisis in Darién is nothing new. For months, there has been an increase in people who have decided to make the dangerous journey. Most illegal immigrants who are exposed to the dangers of the region flee communist and Bolivarian regimes. This is the case of Venezuelans, who make up more than half of the total number of people who cross.

In order to continue this dialogue, both delegations agreed to hold a new meeting next February.
