FBI director says he's "never seen" the U.S. face as many risks or threats of terrorist attacks as it does now
Christopher Wray ensured that the agency is dedicating significant efforts to identify risks and take concrete measures to prevent them.
FBI Director Christopher Wray notified that since the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel, the risk of a terrorist attack in the United States has reached unprecedented levels.
This Tuesday, during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Wray shared his concern about the growing threats of terrorism and highlighted that, throughout his career, he has never seen a time when so many elevated threats have occurred simultaneously.
"I've never seen a time where all the threats or so many of the threats are all elevated, all at exactly the same time," he said.
The FBI director used the analogy of the flashing red lights that emerged before the 9/11 attack, indicating that he currently sees "blinking red lights everywhere."
Wray also reported that since the October 7 massacre in Israel, a "rogue's gallery of foreign terrorists" have called for attacks against the United States, and the threats have only increased.
"Given the steady drumbeat of calls for attacks by foreign terrorist organizations since Oct. 7, we're working around the clock to identify and disrupt potential attacks by those inspired by Hamas's horrific terrorist attacks in Israel," he said.
These comments add to warnings Wray had already made in October when he informed Senate lawmakers that the actions of Hamas and its allies could serve as inspiration in a way that had not been seen "since ISIS launched its so-called caliphate several years ago."
Risk of the arrival of foreign terrorists
This year, there has already been a record number of arrests of terrorist suspects, and after the attack on Israel, the risk of more foreign terrorists entering the country has increased.
"It is imperative that you address this issue immediately to ensure the safety of American citizens," said Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Missouri, in a letter he sent to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in October.
For its part, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Intelligence Division of the San Diego Field Office alerted its personnel about the possible arrival of terrorists along the southern border.
However, an overwhelming number of migrants continue to arrive despite warnings and increasing threats.
