Trust in the media is at its lowest level in more than 50 years, a recent survey has revealed.

The development comes as President Donald Trump has, for almost a decade, raged against the "fake news" legacy outlets and new media have arisen to combat the left-leaning bias of mainstream platforms.

Just 28% of respondents in the latest Gallup survey said they had a "great deal" or "fair" amount of trust in mass media to report news accurately and fairly. A further 36% said they had "not very much" while 34% had "none at all."

The data continues a steady trend of decline in trust in the media that began in the mid-1970s, at which time more than 70% of the public had a "great deal" or "fair" amount of trust in the media to report accurately.

Trust varies considerably by political party, with 62% of Republicans saying they had no trust in the mass media, compared to just 9% of Democrats.
