Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow becomes highest-paid player in NFL history

The face of the Bengals franchise agreed to a five-year, $275 million contract. It surpasses the one Justin Herbert signed with the Chargers in July.

On the same day that the new NFL season kicked off, a historic deal was signed, with Joe Burrow becoming the highest-paid player of all time. The quarterback agreed with the Cincinnati Bengals to a five-year contract valued at $275 million, or $55 million annually.

This deal surpasses the one Justin Herbert got with the Los Angeles Chargers. He signed a five-year contract worth $262.5 million.

The NFL posted the news on its website, based on reporting from Ian Rapoport. "The Bengals and star QB Joe Burrow have a huge new deal, as he's set to be the new highest paid QB in the NFL. Right before the season, Burrow and Cincy get their long-awaited deal. He gets his 5-year, $275M deal," the sports journalist said on X (formerly Twitter).

Burrow began with the Bengals in 2020 after being the first overall pick in that year's NFL Draft. In his first three seasons, he has played 42 games and thrown for 11,774 yards, 82 touchdowns and 31 interceptions, according to the league's website.

Burrow and the Bengals lost Super Bowl LVI (2022) to the Los Angeles Rams, 23-20.
