The U.S. women's soccer team sparked controversy over their lack of enthusiasm for the national anthem. Footage of the players during the pre-match against Vietnam sparked a good deal of criticism, both on social media and from journalists.
When the national anthem started at Eden Park Stadium, several members of the women's national team did not put their hands over their hearts or sing along with the music. Only five of the 11 players showed respect for the country and the flag.

“I really do believe their version of what a feminist is, what it means to be an empowered woman, at least as an American woman, means you need to hate your country,” Megyn Kelly said on her show when discussing the images.
The Rapinoe effect
The controversy did not stop there. Megan Rapinoe was absent during the anthem. The player, known for her woke ideology, is unfortunately known for such incidents. She already has a long history of not following protocol and making controversial statements. In 2019, she claimed that she wouldn't sing the anthem or put her hand on her heart to the tune of Star-Spangled Banner. Rapinoe, who announced her retirement from the national team after this World Cup, claimed on several occasions to feel "deeply" and "extremely" American. However, she continues to disrespect the country and its symbols.
According to Emily Jashinsky, a co-host on the Megyn Kelly show, the behavior of six of the team's 11 players stems in part from Rapinoe. It is also a reflection of America's younger generation. “It has come from Rapinoe, and it's not just the culture of the team,” Jashinsky said. “It's a culture of the team that's reflecting the culture of younger Americans, and it's really disrespectful to people who put their lives on the line for the country. I think: Why are you even playing on the team? Like it gets to this incoherence.”
Naomi Girma responds
Naomi Girma, a midfielder for the national team, spoke to the press about this controversy. The player claimed that each player was focused on the game and that ultimately, it's up to each individual to decide whether to put their hand over their heart for the national anthem. "When we're out there we're preparing for the game, that [the national anthem] isn't the focus. Ultimately every player has the choice, that's all I have to say."
