A University of Alabama basketball player was arrested Sunday for the murder of a 23-year-old woman. Darius Miles, 21, was involved in a shooting near the Tuscaloosa campus which also wounded another young man.

According to local police, Miles was arrested along with Michael Lynn Davis, 20, for shooting at a car in an area near the campus known as "The Strip" at around 1:45 a.m. As a result of the attack, Jamea Jonae Harris, 23, was shot and killed.

Miles dismissed from the team

The police report states that one of the two arrested also had gunshot wounds, resulting from retaliation shots fired by those in the car. Police did not specify whether the injured was Davis or Miles. Initial investigations indicate that the two parties had an argument on "The Strip" that culminated in the shooting.

After learning of the events, the university issued a statement announcing Miles' dismissal from the basketball team. "We have been made aware of the recent allegation against student-athlete Darius Miles; he has been dismissed from campus and is no longer a member of the Alabama men's basketball team," the release noted.
