The new version of "Snow White" is the subject of controversy. Months after its release, the remake of the 1937 animated classic continues to make headlines. First, it was because its protagonist, actress Rachel Zegler, criticized the original Disney version and claimed that the changes they were making were necessary.
However, not everyone agrees. David Hand, whose father directed the original "Snow White," lashed out at this new woke version. As he told The Telegraph, this remake is "insulting." He added that both his father, also called David Hand, and Walt Disney would be "turning in their graves."
Hand, who worked as a designer for the company in the 90s, told the British newspaper that people who have never seen the original movie often "misunderstand" it and therefore "don't know what they're talking about." In this way, he claimed that "it is not anti-feminist to want to fall in love," but that it is another type of mentality different from the one that exists today:
I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it. I think it’s pathetic that people feel that way... these are art forms in the world of film today. The original film was done with good taste when it was written... and I disagree with this whole new concept... but I know Disney’s getting into that mode.
The remake is an excuse to hide Disney's lack of creativity
According to Hand, the case of "Snow White" is just one more example of the company's attempt to include woke ideology in its animated classics. He told the English newspaper that it is a "disgrace," since Disney "is trying to do something new with something that was such a great success earlier":
I’m afraid of what they’re going to do with the early films... their thoughts are just so radical now. They change the stories, they change the thought processes of the characters, they just aren’t the original stories anymore. They’re making up new woke things and I’m just not into any of that. I find it quite frankly, a bit insulting that they may have done with some of these classic films. There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did... I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.
Hand says that the new trend affecting the rewritten animated classics is nothing more than an excuse to hide Disney's lack of creativity. He recommended that they focus on creating new films instead of remaking the ones that have already been successful:
They shouldn’t be taking a classic and rewriting it in their own image. Pick on something else... create new characters, if you’re gonna do this, but don’t destroy or try to destroy something that is, that is a classic and is a beautiful piece.
