Senator Dianne Feinstein announces she will not seek re-election in 2024

The 89-year-old California legislator said she will give up her Senate seat to a new representative at the end of her term.

Senator Dianne Feinstein announced that she will not run for re-election in 2024. The Democratic legislator from California says that she will give up her Senate seat to a new candidate when her term ends. She already has two potential replacements; Democratic Representatives Katie Porter (D-CA) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced hours later that they will run for the seat that will be vacated in 2024 by Senator Feinstein.

It was the 89-year-old Democratic senator herself who announced her decision not to run for re-election in 2024. She did so through a press release in which she reiterated that she will continue to fight to achieve "as much for California as I can" even after her retirement:

I am announcing today I will not run for reelection in 2024 but intend to accomplish as much for California as I can through the end of next year when my term ends. Even with a divided Congress, we can still pass bills that will improve lives. Each of us was sent here to solve problems. That’s what I’ve done for the last 30 years, and that’s what I plan to do for the next two years. My thanks to the people of California for allowing me to serve them.
