Most expensive sale in sports history closes: Commanders sold for $6.05 billion

The NFL approved the transaction after months of negotiations. Sports magnate Josh Harris is the new owner.

The National Football League (NFL) owners' meeting unanimously approved the $6.05 billion sale of the Washington Commanders, making it the most expensive sale of a sports team in history. The operation took months to complete.

The franchise competes in the East Division of the National Football Conference. The team will move from the hands of Daniel Snyder to those of Josh Harris, a sports mogul who is the majority owner of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, the NHL's New Jersey Devils, and minority owner of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers and the Premier League's Crystal Palace. Former NBA player Magic Johnson is also part of the new ownership group.

"Today my teammates and I were entrusted by the NFL with the stewardship of a great franchise. As a lifelong Washington football fan who grew up here, I know that the Commanders are more than just a sports team. This is an institution, passed down from generation to generation," Harris said in a statement. "To Commanders fans everywhere, our promise is simple: we will do the work, create the culture and make the investment needed to deliver for this team and for Washington."

Roger Goodell, the NFL's commissioner, congratulated Harris on closing the purchase of the Commanders:
