(AFP) A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far East on Saturday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake occurred 111 kilometers east of the Russian city of Petropavlovsk of Kamchatka, the administrative center of the region of the same name, at a depth of 39.5 kilometers, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that "dangerous" waves were possible along coastlines within 300 kilometers of the quake's epicenter.

In July, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck off the Kamchatka peninsula, and triggered tsunamis up to four meters high across the Pacific and evacuations from Hawaii to Japan.

The 8.8-magnitude quake was the largest since 2011, when a 9.1-magnitude one off Japan caused a tsunami that killed more than 15,000 people.

It prompted authorities in Japan to order nearly two million people to head for higher ground.

Tsunami warnings were also issued across the region, before being rescinded or downgraded.
