State media reported that at least 10 people were killed and at least four people are missing after a cable snapped on a mega-bridge under construction in northwest China on Friday.

A video released by state broadcaster CCTV showed how the center section of the Jianzha Bridge arch suddenly gave way and plunged into the waters of the Yellow River.

The Jianzha Bridge, located on the Sichuan-Qinghai line, is the world's longest continuous double-track steel girder arch bridge and the first railway crossing across the Yellow River, the second longest in China.

The state-run Xinhua news agency detailed that the cause was a failure of a steel cable.

In addition, 15 workers and a project manager were reportedly at the construction site, located in Qinghai province, when the rope broke in the early hours of the morning.

According to CCTV, it is not yet possible to determine what happened to two of those present.

Hundreds of rescuers were mobilized for the search and rescue operation, Xinhua reported.
