US President Donald Trump ordered that Greenland be transferred to US Northern Command, in a move intended to strengthen White House control over Arctic defense. In a statement, the Pentagon confirmed the transfer, specifying that lPituffik Space Base would now be under the jurisdiction of the Northern Command. That base is known not only for being the country's northernmost military installation and for being located north of the Arctic Circle, but also for being extremely important to the numerous space surveillance and missile warning operations of both NATO and the United States.
"The President recently ordered a change to the Unified Command Plan. This change shifts Greenland from the U.S. European Command area of responsibility to the U.S. Northern Command area of responsibility. Consistent with the President's intent and the Interim National Defense Strategic Guidance, this change will strengthen the Joint Force's ability to defend the U.S. homeland, contributing to a more robust defense of the western hemisphere and deepening relationships with Arctic allies and partners," Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell wrote in the statement.
The move would bolster U.S. defense
According to the network Fox News, the change of command would fall under the Unified Command Plan (UCP)which is a strategic document that the Department of Defense reviews every two years, whose purpose is to redistribute responsibilities among the country's different military commands to ensure that resources are fully aligned with the country's overall defense priorities. In that context, the transfer of both Greenland and Pituffik Space Base to Northern Command would be an interesting strategic move that would bolster the United States' ability to address emerging threats from the Arctic and protect its territory more efficiently.
"As the northernmost Department of Defense facility, Pituffik Space Base continues to provide key missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance missions supporting homeland defense and space superiority," a Space Force spokesman explained to the conservative network.
