MLB: Venezuela's Andruw Monasterio completes Milwaukee's major league record-tying win

After coming from seven runs down on Friday, Milwaukee thwarted the Cincinnati Reds again on Saturday in a thrilling 6x5 win. In New York, the Mets picked up the slack after three straight losses with a 3x1 win over the Seattle Mariners. The neighboring Yankees also beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12x8 on Saturday on the road. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies lost 2-0 to the Washington Nationals.

(AFP)The Milwaukee Brewers on Friday picked up their franchise-record 14th straight victory in Major League Baseball thanks to a home run by Venezuelan Andruw Monasterio in extra innings.

After rallying from seven runs down Friday, Milwaukee thwarted the Cincinnati Reds again Saturday in a fast-paced 6x5 win.

The Brewers were down 2-for-1 when Brice Turang, after two outs in the ninth inning, got the agonizing tying run by taking advantage of a throwing error by the Reds' Dominican gem Elly De la Cruz.

After another score apiece, Venezuela's Monasterio capped the win and the visitors new record with a colossal three-run home run in the eleventh inning.

"It was an incredible feeling. Fourteen wins, a franchise record, and I wear number 14 ... This is something just from God, the universe or something," Monasterio said in the locker room.

Milwaukee thus left behind its previous record of 13 straight wins, set in 1987, and strengthens its solid National League lead with the competition's best record of 78 wins and 44 losses.

Their current 14-game winning streak, achieved despite the absence of Venezuelan prospect Jackson Chourio, is the sixth-longest in MLB this century.

Mets beat Mariners

In New York, the Mets raised their heads after three straight losses by beating the Seattle Mariners 3x1 with runs driven in by their stars, Dominican Juan Soto, Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor and American Pete Alonso.

The Queens ninth is trying to get out of its biggest slump of the season, in which it accumulated nine losses in its previous 10 games.

Yankees power past Cardinals in 12x8 road win

Their neighbors Yankees also beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12x8 on Saturday on the road.

Their leader, American Aaron Judge, connected on a home run and towed in two runs but the star of the night was compatriot Ben Rice with seven runs pushed in, three of them with a homer in the fourth episode.

Nationals defeat Phillies

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies, who lost 2x0 to the Washington Nationals, confirmed that their Dominican reliever Jhoan Duran does not suffer a serious injury from the hard ball he took to his right ankle shortly before the end of Friday's game.
