América opens Clausura-2025 Mexican soccer season with a win over Querétaro
Opening weekend will continue this Saturday. At Olímpico Universitario Stadium, Cruz Azul, last season's tournament leader, will host Atlas.
América, the newly crowned three-time Mexican soccer champions, beat Queretaro 1-0 on their visit to La Corregidora Stadium on Friday in the opening match of the Clausura-2025 tournament.
In the 64th minute, América went on the counterattack. Erick Sánchez drove the ball from the center circle, filtered it into the box and Antonio Álvarez appeared on the edge of the six-yard box to score the only goal of the match.
At Caliente Stadium, Toluca, led by Argentine coach Antonio Mohamed, won 4-2 against Tijuana, led by Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio.
Alexis Vega gave Toluca's "Diablos Rojos" a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute with a shot from close range.
Before halftime, in the third minute of stoppage time, Colombian Raúl Zúñiga made it 1-1 for Tijuana's Xoloitzcuintles, finishing a ball that the goalkeeper had saved.
Vega also made it 2-1 for Tijuana with a header from close range in the 57th minute.
Brazilian Hélio "Helinho" Nunes made it 3-1 in the 71st minute with a left-footed touch inside the box after an individual play.
The Xoloitzcuintles came within 3-2 in the 80th minute with a touch by Argentine Emanuel Reynoso from close range.
In the 85th minute, Portugal's Paulo Dias Paulinho stretched his leg out in front of the goal to finish the game off and make it 4-2.
And at El Encanto Stadium, the Cañoneros del Mazatlán rescued a 1-1 draw against the Bravos de Juárez.
Dieter Villalpando made it 1-0 for the Bravos in the 17th minute with a header inside the six-yard box.
Mauro Lainez, in the 86th minute with a mid-range shot, made it 1-1 for the Cañoneros.
