Champions League: Manchester City stumble and PSG avoid surprise against Girona

In a rematch of the 2022-2023 season final, Manchester City and Inter Milan drew (0-0) at the Etihad Stadium in their first matchday of the UEFA Champions League.

Statistically, the English team was superior: they generated more scoring chances and had greater ball possession. However, they came up against the defensive solidity of Inter, who also had a few chances to take the lead.

"We would have preferred to win, but I have no regrets because they defended very well," Pep Guardiola, City manager, said after the game. "You prefer to win, but there are still seven games left and we will see what happens."

The Spanish coach acknowledged that they still have room for improvement: "We are not yet in October, so we have not yet reached our maximum level."

In the next matchday, the English will travel to Slovakia to face Slovan Bratislava, while the Italians will host Red Star.

PSG's luck smiled on them

A late mistake by Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga - who put in a brilliant performance - led to Girona's defeat in their Champions League debut. Paris Saint-Germain earned their first three points in this match thanks to a goal by Portuguese full-back Nuno Mendes.

Despite their defeat, Girona showed their best version in the first Champions League match in their history, as PSG manager Luis Enrique acknowledged: "Girona showed why they are a Champions League team, why they were leaders for many rounds of La Liga last season. It has been very difficult."

The French side, who are seeking their first Orejona, will face Arsenal in London on their next matchday. For their part, Girona will try to pick up their first points at home against Feyenoord.
