An expert at comebacks. Real Madrid once again pulled off a dramatic comeback in the UEFA Champions League, its favorite competition, to ultimately defeat AEK Athens (2-3) in Greece—an inferior opponent that posed more difficulties than expected for the most successful team in European soccer.

The Uruguayan midfielder Fede Valverde saved Real Madrid in stoppage time (92nd minute) with a spectacular long-range goal.

The match got off to the worst possible start. In the 12th minute, the Mauritanian forward Aboubakary Koita put AEK Athens ahead (1-0) with a left-footed shot from inside the box.

The equalizer was scored by Jude Bellingham. The English midfielder, who has been playing his best so far this season, came up with a left-footed backheel shot (1-1) to tie the game.

The other three goals came in the second half of the match. In the 75th minute, midfielder Stavros Pilios put the Greeks back in front (2-1), capping off a great team play.

However, AEK Athens' joy lasted only a few moments. In the 78th minute, Kylian Mbappé sparked Real Madrid's comeback (2-2) by slotting the ball into the Greek net from close range.

Real Madrid's victory was sealed by Valverde. The Uruguayan midfielder didn't hesitate and unleashed a powerful shot from long range (2-3) to keep his team undefeated in this edition of the UEFA Champions League.
