With 40-point performances, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic powered wins for the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday in the NBA, where the last—and surprising—unbeaten team, the Memphis Grizzlies, finally fell.
Here are the highlights from the day's action in the NBA:
Thunder gets a breather
Gilgeous-Alexander went off with 43 points to lead the Thunder to victory on the Cleveland Cavaliers' home court by a score of 117-112.
Plagued by a wave of injuries, Oklahoma City had suffered two consecutive losses by more than 20 points before its successful road game against the team led by Donovan Mitchell (17 points) and James Harden (14).
A sublime performance by SGA, the reigning two-time NBA MVP (Most Valuable Player), led the Thunder to a victory that gives them some breathing room after a very difficult start to the season.
The 2025 champions' hopes of reclaiming the throne have been severely dented by a cascade of injuries that sidelined two of their star players, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, as well as another starter, Cason Wallace. It is uncertain whether Williams and Wallace will return before the end of the season.
That night, the NBA was treated to another performance on par with that of the Canadian MVP. In Los Angeles, Luka Doncic led the Lakers to a 138-117 victory over the Miami Heat with 42 points, who continue to disappoint despite the expectations generated by the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Greek star recorded 30 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists, but he also turned the ball over 7 times in a game where the Lakers took control with a blistering third quarter.
Doncic, who also tallied 7 rebounds and 13 assists, is dazzling in the early stages of his first season as the undisputed leader in Los Angeles following LeBron James' departure to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Slovenian, who has scored more than 40 points in four of his last five games, is the league's leading scorer this season with an average of 38.3 points per game, a huge lead over second-place Stephen Curry (30.0).
No undefeated teams
Oklahoma City's victory, which brings their record to 5-2, and the Lakers' win (6-2) stood out on a day when all 30 teams took the court, before the NBA suspends play on Tuesday for the U.S. midterm elections.
The league also saw the last undefeated team, the Memphis Grizzlies, who suffered an unexpected home loss by a score of 135-134 in overtime at the hands of the New Orleans Pelicans.
Ty Jerome led a thrilling late comeback for Memphis with 15 points in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, but the Grizzlies' rally fell short.
LeBron dominates the East
Meanwhile, LeBron's Philadelphia 76ers improved their record to 7-1 to remain atop the Eastern Conferenceby defeating the Chicago Bulls 126-107.
Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points and Jaylen Brown added 25 to lead the Sixers to their fourth straight win. V.J. Edgecombe scored 21 points, and LeBron and Joel Embiid each contributed 15 points.
The defending champions, the New York Knicks, improved to 3-4 with a 103-90 over their neighbors, the Brooklyn Nets, at Madison Square Garden.
Landry Shamet led the Knicks with 22 points off the bench, while Jalen Brunson added 19 points, including four three-pointers.
