Messi's superb comeback with Inter Miami
Out of action for two months due to injury, the Argentine star returned with two goals and an assist in his team's victory.
After two months out with an injury he suffered to his right ankle in the Copa America 2024 final, Leo Messi returned to the field of play in the best possible way: a brace and an assist, including a record.
The Argentine star was the star of Inter Miami's comeback against the Philadelphia Union (3-1), scoring the first two goals for his team and assisting his longtime teammate Luis Suarez for the Uruguayan striker to close the scoreboard.
The first of the goals came in the 25th minute, after the Philadelphia Union took the lead right from the start of the game. After a solid build-up with Suárez, Messi dribbled past and beat the opposing goalkeeper with a shot beyond his reach.
Four minutes later, the Argentine culminated a good move by his team with one of his patented low shots.
A few seconds before the referee whistled for the end of the match, Suárez sealed the game with a shot from the edge of the box after an assist from Messi.
New Messi record
Messi's two goals and assist against the Philadelphia Union set a new career record. The Argentine star became the fastest player to score 15 goals and dish out 15 assists in Major League Soccer (MLS) history, needing just 19 games.
With this victory, Inter Miami adds to its lead in the standings, with 19 wins, five draws and four defeats in 28 games, holding a 10-point advantage over the next-closest team.
