Bondi seeks death penalty for Luigi Mangione in UnitedHealth CEO murder case
The attorney general described the crime as "an act of political violence" with "significant planning and premeditation."

Luigi Mangione, in court in Manhattan
Attorney General Pam Bondi has requested the death penalty for the suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth. Legal proceedings have been initiated against Luigi Mangione, who remains the sole suspect in the case.
"Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America," Bondi stated in a message addressed to acting U.S. Attorney Matthew Podolsky.
"After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again," the attorney general added.

Mangione faces 11 state and federal charges, including two counts of stalking, one firearm offense, and one count of manslaughter, as well as committing a terrorist act. According to Bondi, the crime was "an act of political violence" carried out with "significant planning and premeditation."
During his first hearing, Mangione, who was accompanied in the courtroom by his attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, pleaded not guilty.
Thompson was assassinated on December 4, 2024 outside a hotel in New York, where he was on his way to speak at a conference.
Five days later, Mangione was arrested at a fast-food restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on charges of murdering the UnitedHealth CEO.
