American Faye Hall, who had been detained in Afghanistan since February, was released and transferred to the Qatari embassy in Kabul, where she was confirmed to be in good health following a medical assessment. Arrangements are currently being made for her return to the United States.

Agreement linked to the elimination of bounties

According to The Telegraph, Taliban officials said the decision to release Hall was made after President Donald Trump eliminated multimillion-dollar bounties for Taliban leaders, including senior members of the Haqqani network.

The United States was offering a $10 million reward for information leading to the capture of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban regime's current interior minister. However, the exact terms of the deal have not been officially confirmed, and neither the White House nor the State Department has issued statements on the matter.

Detention and context.

Hall was arrested on Feb. 1 along with Peter Reynolds, 79, and his wife, Barbie, 75, a British couple who ran the organization Rebuild, focused on educational programs in Afghanistan. The organization reportedly developed initiatives for the education of mothers and children, a sector heavily restricted under the Taliban regime. It is unclear what link Hall had to the couple or the organization.

The Telegraph reported that the detention of the British nationals was not due to legal or religious infractions but was part of a political maneuver by a Taliban faction to generate international pressure on its leadership. The couple's children wrote a letter to the Afghan authorities requesting their release and stressing their respect for local laws and their roots in the country.

Other recent release cases

Hall's release follows that of George Glezmann, a U.S. citizen held for more than two years and released last week after negotiations between the Trump administration and Qatari officials. Also, earlier this year, Ryan Corbett and William McKenty, two other Americans, were released through a prisoner swap agreed to by the Joe Biden administration.

Qatar, which plays the role of a protective power for the United States in Afghanistan, facilitated the logistics for Hall's departure, cementing its role in international negotiations with the Taliban regime.
