California: At least seven killed in two shootings in Half Moon Bay
Police arrested the suspect, a 67-year-old male identified as Chunli Zhao. At least one other victim is seriously injured.
At least seven people were killed and one more was seriously injured after two shootings Monday at two separate locations in Half Moon Bay, a small coastal community in central California.
The suspect, identified as Chunli Zhao, 67, was arrested two hours after the shootings. According to local media that recorded the moment of the arrest, Zhao was taken into custody after surrendering to the authorities.
According to San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus, the assailant acted alone. Authorities were alerted to a shooting in San Mateo County at 2:22 p.m. local time (5:22 p.m. Miami time), the sheriff said. They found four victims dead and one injured upon arrival at the first location, and shortly thereafter, three more victims were found lifeless at a different location.
Authorities reported that two separate crime scenes were recorded, one at the Magic Mushroom Farm at 12761 San Mateo Road/Highway 92 and a second near a trucking facility at 2125 Cabrillo Highway S./Highway 1.
Authorities believe Zhao acted alone. This incident is the second mass shooting the state has experienced in three days. It came a day after another mass shooting recorded during Chinese New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, California.
Gov. Gavin Newsom said he learned of the news of the shooting while at a hospital meeting with victims in Monterey Park. "Tragedy upon tragedy," Newsom tweeted.
