Ron DeSantis invokes Second Amendment to prevent looting from occurring
Florida's governor issued the warning after the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian: "We are a law and order state. So don't think you are going to take advantage of people who have suffered misery."
Governor Ron DeSantis, issued a public warning to prevent a wave of looting in the properties of the victims of Hurricane Ian: "Florida is a Second Amendment state." With this phrase, the Republican governor is trying to prevent theft.
The Second Amendment referred to by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis establishes the right to bear and use arms.
"We are a law-and-order state, and this is a law-and-order community. So do not think that you are going to take advantage of people who have suffered misery," said the governor.
DeSantis reiterated in another conference that same day that "don't even think about looting" and added:
The havoc caused by Ian
Hurricane Ian killed at least 45 people in Florida and battered South Carolina Friday afternoon with heavy rain, destructive winds and storm surge.
In Florida several coastal homes were swept out to sea and numerous buildings were wrecked across the state. Floodwaters trapped some residents inland in places like Orlando.
