The confrontation between Donald Trump and Illinois Democratic leaders over the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago to fight crime experienced an escalation after the crossing of messages on social networks.

The president opened fire, with a post on Truth Social joking about possibly sending troops to the Windy City. Emulating the celebrated Apocalypse Now - renamed in the post as "Chipocalypse Now" - Trump warns that "Chicago is about to find out why it's called the War Department."

"I love the smell of deportations in the morning"

In addition, Trump began the post by snidely paraphrasing his well-remembered phrase "I love the smell of napalm in the morning..." by substituting the chemical compound for "deportations."

Pritzker: "US president threatens to declare war on an American city"

A post that did not amuse the Illinois governor, who was quick to express his outrage on X. JB Pritzker picked up the gauntlet on the warmongering tone and denounced that Trump wants to "to go to war with an American city." Then, Pritzker called trump a "wannabe dictator."

Brandon Johnson: Trump "wants to occupy our city and violate our Constitution"

Also Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson turned to X to critic that "the President’s threats are beneath the honor of our nation." The mayor also accused Trump of wanting to "occupy our city and violate our Constitution."

The Windy City mayor then said: "We must defend our democracy from this authoritarianism by protecting each other and protecting Chicago from Donald Trump"
