BBB passed! Vance breaks Senate tie, handing Trump his first major legislative victory
The vice president cast the tie-breaking vote, clearing the way for the president's One Big, Beautiful Bill to return to the House.

J.D. Vance and Donald Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump scored a significant legislative victory Tuesday as the Senate passed his One Big, Beautiful Bill.
Vice President J.D. Vance cast the tie-breaking vote, playing a crucial role in the bill's passage. It now returns to the House of Representatives, where it will have to be passed before Trump signs the bill into law.
Trump wasted no time responding to his victory. Speaking from Florida, the president celebrated the Senate’s approval of his "One Big Beautiful Bill," calling it "music to my ears."
"Wow, music to my ears," Trump said, while praising Vance. "He's doing a good job."
"There is something for everyone, and I think it’s going to go very nicely in the House. Actually, I think it will be easier in the House than it was in the Senate," the president added.
Three Republicans against Trump
Despite holding a 53-seat majority in the Senate, Republican senators Thom Tillis (North Carolina), Rand Paul (Kentucky), and Susan Collins (Maine) broke ranks and voted against the president’s bill, siding with the Democrats.
Right after the vote ended, Collins linked her no vote to her refusal of the cuts to be implemented on Medicaid, even though she is committed to the tax cuts the president wants to implement.
"I strongly support extending the tax relief for families and small businesses. My vote against this bill stems primarily from the harmful impact it will have on Medicaid, affecting low-income families and rural health care providers like our hospitals and nursing homes," Collins posted on X.
Johnson: "The House will work quickly to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill"
From the House of Representatives, the speaker, Mike Johnson, assured that he will work “quickly” to get Trump's Big Beautiful Bill passed before July 4, the deadline set by the president.
"The House will work quickly to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill that enacts President Trump’s full America First agenda by the Fourth of July. The American people gave us a clear mandate, and after four years of Democrat failure, we intend to deliver without delay," Johnson wrote on X.
"Republicans were elected to do exactly what this bill achieves: secure the border, make tax cuts permanent, unleash American energy dominance, restore peace through strength, cut wasteful spending, and return to a government that puts Americans first," the speaker added.
Trump's Big, Beautiful Bill lists a series of measures that seek to redefine many of the key areas of government and federal spending, from tax reforms to border security funding to defense spending to Medicaid to energy to issues such as artificial intelligence (AI) to reproductive health to agriculture.
