Newsom distances himself from Democrats on trans athletes in women's sports: "Deeply unfair"
So said the California governor in the first episode of his podcast, which featured conservative commentator Charlie Kirk as a guest.

Gavin Newsom asserted that transgender athletes' participation in women's sports is "deeply unfair." The California Governor debuted his podcast, which he named after himself, with conservative commentator Charlie Kirk as his guest. Among other things, the Democrat distanced himself from his party on one of Donald Trump's top priorities in the White House.
Newsom, one of the most mentioned names when it comes to thinking about the presidential race heading into 2028, launched his podcast last month, assuring that he planned to have in-depth conversations with "top leaders and architects of the MAGA movement." Indeed, the first guest was Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and very close to the current president.
Between topics, the activist mentioned to Newsom the need to remove transgender athletes from women's sports, something that, according to The New York Times, is endorsed by eight out of 10 Americans.

"Right now you should come out and be like 'you know what, the young man who's about to win the state championship in a long jump in female sports', that shouldn't happen. You as the governor should step out and say no," Kirk told him.
Thereupon, the California governor distanced himself from his party on this issue and responded as follows: "I think it's a matter of fairness; I completely agree with you on that. It's a fairness issue. It's deeply unfair."
"There's also a humility and grace but you know, that these poor people are more likely to commit suicide have anxiety and depression. And the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with as well. So both things I can hold in my hand," he added.

Just hours later, Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-CA) took to the House floor and called on the governor to issue an executive order confirming his statements on the podcast.
"Now, that message is apparently not been received by the United States Senate, which recently refused to pass the bill we passed in the House, the Protecting Women and Girls Sports Act. But the governor has made his statement. He claims this is his position. It would represent a change of heart, but it means nothing unless he acts on it. If he continues to support policies that do the exact opposite," Kiley said.
No Senate Democrat voted in favor of the Protecting Women and Girls in Sports Act
In effect, it would have required Title IX to treat gender as "recognized solely on a person's reproductive biology and genetics at birth" and would not allow any adjustment to apply to gender identity.
When it came to a vote, the legislation ended with 51 yes votes to 45 no votes. The vote was negative because it did not exceed the 60 votes needed to overcome the filibuster to get out of debate. No Democrat present accompanied the bill.
"Well, at least now the American people know the truth. Even after the landslide election of Donald Trump, Democrats still support men competing in women's sports. This is far from over. I will never stop fighting to protect women and girls," the Alabama senator said after last Monday's vote.
