President Biden to meet with families of victims of New Orleans attack
The president will travel to the city on Monday with first lady Jill Biden, the White House announced.
US President Joe Biden will travel on Monday with his wife Jill Biden to New Orleans to meet with the families of victims of the terrorist attack that killed 14 people and wounded 35 others, the White House said.
Biden said Friday that he spoke with the families of the victims of the attack, which police say was carried out by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a radical Islamist supporter of the terrorist group ISIS, who intentionally ran over several people who were celebrating the new year on Jan. 1 and then got out of the vehicle and began shooting with an assault rifle until he was shot down by police officers.
"An act of terrorism"
Christopher Raia, deputy assistant director of the counterterrorism division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said Thursday that it was "an act of terrorism" that "was premeditated" and "evil."
"We do not assess at this point … that anyone else is involved in this attack," he added.
The official further stated that the FBI was confident that the attacker had no accomplices.
Earlier, the FBI suggested that the bomber may not have acted alone.
Raia further claimed that Jabbar had posted videos prior to the attack in which he expressed his support for ISIS.
The official added that the attacker claimed to have joined ISIS a few months ago, although his relationship to the terrorist group is unclear.
