Tim Walz was confronted about his Minnesota policies in a difficult interview with Fox News
The Democratic vice presidential candidate also tried to defend his record on questionable claims with host Shannon Bream.
Tim Walz was on Fox News for a tough interview in which he was confronted about his previous claims about his record and agenda as governor of Minnesota. Kamala Harris' running mate for the presidential election debuted on a Sunday show with host Shannon Bream.
Both Walz and Harris have been the focus of much criticism for their small number of interviews since they became official as the Democratic presidential ticket. Thus, the Minnesota governor's interview with Fox News drew attention over the weekend.
For about fifteen minutes, he was confronted about his political agenda as governor and even attempted to distance himself from Harris on issues such as immigration.
A recap of Tim Walz's interview with Fox News
One of the most viral moments of the interview was when Walz tried to explain the contents of the law he signed into law in Minnesota.
"You signed the bill that makes it legal through all nine months. Is that a position you think Democrats should advocate for nationally?" Bream asked, referring to Minnesota legislation that imposes no limits on abortion procedures during nine months of pregnancy.
"The vice president and I have been clear the restoration of Roe vs. Wade is what we're asking for," Walz replied, to which the host pressed him on the details.
"But that law goes far beyond Roe vs. Wade. Let's agree, in what you signed there's not a single limit through nine months of pregnancy. Roe had a trimester framework that did have limits through the pregnancy. The Minnesota law does not have that," Bream insisted.
"This doesn't change anything. It puts the decision back on to the woman, to the physicians. And we know that this is simply something to be brought up – to be very clear Donald Trump's asking for a nationwide abortion ban," the Minnesota governor added.
The host then reminded him that Trump repeatedly denied that he plans to sign a federal abortion ban, to which Walz simply said the former president was lying.
"That's not the vice president's position"
Walz was also asked about immigration policies he implemented in Minnesota, such as legislation allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses and receive state-funded tuition assistance, among other benefits.
"Are these not the magnets that draw people here, often on journeys that are dangerous to themselves And why should taxpayers in Minnesota or other states pay for those programs?" Bream asked.
Walz began by distancing Kamala Harris from those policies, asserting that "that's not the vice president's position."
"But I will say this, Minnesota is in the top five states for economic activity. We're in the top three in children living in the country and we're one of the top in access to health care. Look, the vice president has made it clear that she has policies that make a difference. Her border policies are the strongest and fairest we've seen," he added.
Finally, Bream asked Walz about his history of inaccurate statements, such as his claims about his military record, the fertility treatment he used or even his presence in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre.
"Look, I speak passionately. I had an entire career, decades before I was in public office. They know, and I'm very proud of my 24 years in service and my record. I have never disparaged someone else in this, but I know that's not what Donald Trump does. They disparage everyone," the Democrat concluded.
