On Thursday night, Mexico's National Team will face Haiti in Phoenix, Arizona. Mexico, known as El Tri, is in high spirits after beating Honduras in their 2023 Gold Cup opener.
The momentum is strong between El Tri and its fans. Upon their arrival at the training hotel in Arizona, they were greeted by nearly a hundred fans and the players were just as happy to see them. Hopefully this will last for the rest of the competition and the team will make them proud.
Mexico has not been crowned in the Gold Cup since 2019, but started opening day strong by taking the lead from the first minute of play and, from there, they were unstoppable. It seems that since coach Jaime Lozano joined the team, things have been going very well for them. The players trust him and are backing his decisions while trusting the process. From what we have seen in press conferences and interviews with Voz Media, several of them are more comfortable with a Mexican coach.
Mexico has never lost to Haiti in its history, winning five games and tying two, although the last match they played, they won 1-0, which means that Haiti has improved, so much so that in their first match of the tournament they defeated Qatar.
Although there is no doubt that Mexico is the favorite to take the three points, Haiti is giving them a run for their money, with more experience, new plays and persistence on the field. Against Qatar, they wouldn’t settle to lose and did everything to tie the game. They will now attempt to qualify for the Gold Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2019.
