Donald Trump is back on the Republican ballot in Colorado. This was announced by Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold after the state Republican Party filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. The state's highest court's initial ruling had excluded the former president from the Republican primary, claiming he participated in an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021.
According to Griswold, the Republican, who is also leading in national polls, will momentarily remain on the ballot unless the Supreme Court intervenes and upholds the lower court's ruling or refuses to accept the appeal.
In turn, Griswold had praised the actions of Colorado's highest court, claiming that “Donald Trump engaged in insurrection and was disqualified under the Constitution from the Colorado Ballot. The Colorado Supreme Court got it right. This decision is now being appealed. I urge the US Supreme Court to act quickly given the upcoming presidential primary election.”
The 4-3 ruling ensured that Trump could not appear on the state's ballot since he had engaged in an "insurrection," which, according to a clause of the 14th Amendment disqualifies him from ever holding public office again.
"The Colorado Supreme Court has removed the leading Republican candidate from the primary and general ballots, fundamentally changing the course of American democracy," the Colorado Republican Party warned as part of its fundraiser to reverse the decision.
