The movie based on Mattel's doll, "Barbie," is the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Greta Gerwig's movie has grossed more than $1.360 million worldwide, surpassing "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." It is this year's highest-grossing premiere so far, according to data from Box Office Mojo:

At the end of August, the film became the highest-grossing film in the U.S. by reaching $574.2 million in the country, also surpassing "The Super Mario Bros Movie." which, according to Deadline, took 138 days to reach $574.2 million. On the other hand, 2022's highest-grossing film, "Top Gun: Maverick," managed to gross that same figure in 40 days. "Barbie" only took 34 days to make the same amount in the U.S.

'Barbie' continues to find success

"Barbie" has been extraordinarily successful at the box office. The Warner Bros. movie broke numerous records since its release. In its first weekend, and thanks to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon, the movie grossed $155 million in the U.S. and became the highest-grossing movie in its opening weekend as well as the largest debut for a female director.

Its successes do not end there. Almost a month later, its production company, Warner Bros., announced that "Barbie" was its highest-grossing release in history, surpassing "The Dark Knight," which grossed $536 million domestically in 2008.

"Barbie" is expected to make more over the next few days. Sunday, August 27 is National Cinema Day and, according to AP, 3,000 movie theaters will put tickets on sale for that day at $4 each. This could help Barbie's success continue and become the highest-grossing movie of 2023 not only in the country but around the world.
