A traffic accident between a Metro bus and a vehicle in downtown Seattle left one person dead and 12 others injured (one of them in critical condition).

According to authorities, the bus and the car - a red sedan - collided at an intersection (near the Belltown area at 3:30pm local time). "The collision caused the Metro Bus to go off the road and crash into a building near the intersection," police detective Judinna Gulpan said.

The causes of the accident remain under investigation. According to a statement from King County Metro:

This tragic incident involving a vehicle and one of our buses is heartbreaking. Our main concern is the loss of life and the health of those who were injured. We cannot provide further details at this early point in the investigation. We are working with first responders and offering our support to our community members, employees and passengers.

According to Detective Gulpan, the bus - when it left the road - ran over a woman who was walking outside the building. The victim was immediately pronounced dead and her name has not been released.

The car also sped toward the building. Firefighters had to intervene to remove the driver. The man was rushed to a medical center (he is listed in critical condition).
