World Cup: Iranian national team refuses to sing national anthem in protest against the Islamist regime

The players made the decision in the face of boos from their own supporters. The crackdown and violence against protesters in Iran continues unabated.

The Iranian national soccer team refused to sing their national anthem, Sorud-e Mellí-e Yomhurí-e Eslamí-e Iran, before their match against England at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The team did so in protest against the violence by the so-called 'morality police' against those protesting the the Islamist regime following the murder of Mahsa Amini in September.

The soccer team's protest was met with a negative response from fans. In fact, the crowd began to boo them instead of expressing solidarity.

The Iranian national team's demonstration came due to the unabated repression against protesters in Iran, with hundreds of people dead so far. The team's star striker Sardar Azmoun posted several images and comments supporting the protesters and opposing the Iranian Islamist regime.
