Trump vows to eliminate birthright citizenship for children of illegal migrants

"My policy will choke off a major incentive for continued illegal immigration," the former president said.

Former President Donald Trump announced that if he returns to the White House, he will issue an executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants.

The former president posted a video on social media Tuesday explaining that the order would be part of his plan to secure the border and promised he would sign it "the first day" after taking office.

"My policy will choke off a major incentive for continued illegal immigration, deter more migrants from coming, and encourage many of the aliens Joe Biden has unlawfully let into our country to go back to their home countries," he said.

Trump added in the video that his measure would also end the practice known as "birth tourism" used by thousands of people around the world.

"[They] squat in hotels for their last few weeks of pregnancy to illegitimately and illegally obtain U.S. citizenship for the child, often to later exploit chain migration to jump the line and get green cards for themselves and their family members," the former president said, assuring that now at least one parent must be a citizen or legal resident for the child to obtain citizenship.

Trump also criticized the policies Joe Biden has been implementing on immigration. "(He) has launched an illegal foreign invasion of our country, allowing a record number of illegal aliens to storm across our borders," he said.

Trump's announcement comes at a time when the immigration crisis has broken records. From last October through February alone, authorities reported that they apprehended more than 1 million people attempting to cross the border illegally, and it is believed that by the end of 2023, the number of immigrants apprehended could exceed 3 million.
