Renowned actor Tom Holland spoke about working in Hollywood and said that the business around it scares him. During Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast, Holland also discussed his career, relationships and addiction to alcohol. "I’m happy to say it — I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all," said the Spider-Man actor.
When it comes to his experience in the entertainment industry, he said he constantly tries to get away from Hollywood to live "as normal as possible." " I really am a massive fan of making movies but I really do not like Hollywood, it is not for me. The business really scares me. I understand that I’m a part of that business, and I enjoy my kind of interactions with it. But I am always looking for ways to kind of remove myself from it".
He stressed that throughout his career he met many people who get lost in the industry and it is something he would never want to go through. He maintained that right now his priority is to focus on his family, his friends and the foundation run by his mother. "I've seen so many people come before me and lose themselves, and I've had friends that I've grown up with that aren't friends of mine anymore, because they've lost themselves to this business," he said.
Criticism of Hollywood
Holland's statements coincide with Emily Blunt's opinions on the industry. She explained that she took a break from her acting career because she wanted to spend more time with her family, especially her children. Although she highlighted good things about the projects she did last year, she said it was full of intense moments. "Some were more intense than others. Some were harder than others. Some were more time-consuming than others, and the ones that are time-consuming I think, for me, are becoming few and further between because of just the emotional cost on me, on the kids, on balance," Blunt said.
Tom Holland and Emily Blunt have not been the only ones to criticize Hollywood. Actor Richard Dreyfuss expressed his dissatisfaction with recent inclusion policies. The 75-year-old star of Jaws said in May, during an interview on PBS's Firing Line program, that the Hollywood Academy "treats people like children." He referred to the diversity rules that Hollywood will implement from 2024 onwards. According to the rules, films will have to meet minimum requirements related to representation and inclusion to be eligible for the best film award.
