The Emmys earn historically low ratings

The 75th edition of the awards attracted only 4.3 million viewers, making it the least watched awards show on television.

The Television Academy crisis continues, especially after the ratings for the Emmy Awards were revealed to have reached a new historical low. The gala attracted only 4.3 million viewers, making it the least watched in history.

It also represents a decrease of 27% compared to the last edition. Broadcast by NBC, the 2022 gala achieved a total of 5.9 million viewers. The new historical low this year continued the trend that, The Hollywood Reporter indicated, has been going on for the last six years, where the Emmys have hit five new historical lows.

The awards show's decline is perhaps even more sever taking into account that it was broadcast by Fox. The Emmys rotate their broadcast between different channels each year. The last time Fox broadcast the Emmys was in 2019. That year, it achieved 6.9 million viewers, 37% more than this installment.

Was it a good decision to broadcast the Emmys on a Monday?

However, Deadline reveals, for Fox, the figure is not as bad as it might seem. The Emmy Awards were the network's most-watched unscripted Monday broadcast in more than eight years (excluding, of course, sporting events). It was also the most watched entertainment program broadcast on a Monday in more than 18 months.

However, it seems clear that the Television Academy's idea to air the 75th Emmy Awards on a Monday did not pay off. However, it is not the first time they have done it. 2018 was the first time that the ceremony was broadcast on that day of the week. On that occasion, NBC achieved 10.1 million viewers. Although this wa a positive result, it was the beginning of the end for the Emmys, which, since then, have continued to reach historic lows year after year.
