San Francisco launches guaranteed income program for transgender community

The plan's application form includes 97 identity labels, 19 sexual orientations, and 18 gender-fluid pronoun options.

San Francisco city officials announced a new program called "Guaranteed Income for Trans People" (GIFT) that will provide 55 low-income transgender residents with $1,200 each month for up to 18 months. Mayor London Breed said in a statement:

Our Guaranteed Income Programs allow us to help our residents when they need it most as part of our City’s economic recovery and our commitment to creating a more just city for all. We know that our trans communities experience much higher rates of poverty and discrimination, so this program will target support to lift individuals in this community up.

The program will receive $3 million per year per the city's latest budget report.

97 identity labels

Applications are being accepted through Dec. 15 and requirements include that recipients must live in the city, earn less than $600 per month and identify as"transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming or intersex."

More guaranteed income programs

GIFT is the third guaranteed income plan launched by the city in recent years. In 2020, it created a program to give monthly payments of $1,000 to pregnant African Americans starting in the first trimester and continuing for up to two years after delivery. Then, in 2021, the mayor launched a pilot program to offer $1,000 monthly for up to 18 months to artists affected by the pandemic.

However, San Francisco is not the only city in California to implement such programs. Several Democratic-led areas have created very similar guaranteed income plans:

- Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Times reported that the city of Palm Springs opted to allocate $200,000 of its annual budget for a guaranteed income pilot program for transgender and non-binary residents.

- Last year, Oakland launched a program to provide $500 per month to 600 low-income "BIPOC" families comprised of blacks, indigenous people and people of color. The plan caused displeasure in many people in the city, as it initially excluded white residents from eligibility.
