'Oppenheimer' doesn’t reign supreme at the box office but is Nolan's highest grossing film in first two weeks

The feature film failed to beat Greta Gerwig's “Barbie” but earned more than $400 million in theaters worldwide.

Christopher Nolan's latest film, "Oppenheimer," will not be the most watched film of the summer, but it is the highest grossing in the first two weeks of the veteran director's filmography. With only two weeks at the box office, the feature film earned more than $400 million ($419,427,495) in theaters worldwide, according to data provided by Box Office Mojo.

It thus becomes Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing film, surpassing his two previous hits: "Tenet" released in 2020, had a final box office gross of $365 million while "Batman Begins"which landed on the big screen in 2005, finished its theatrical run with $373 million. It also managed to hold another record, which Universal detailed as the first R-rated film to gross more than $10 million for 10 consecutive days.

Part of "Oppenheimer's" success is due to the phenomenon known as "Barbenheimer," which consists of watching Nolan's film followed by Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," or vice versa. the trend was still seen during the second weekend in which the two shared the box office and which Comscore senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian spoke to Variety about:

Weekend two proves the outpouring of interest in “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” a week ago was not a fluke. Both films put up second weekend numbers that would have been considered solid as debuts and reflect two of the best sophomore session holds in box office history.

'Barbie' dominates the big screen

However, the undisputed queen at the worldwide box office is "Oppenheimer's" counterpart. The feature film starring Margot Robbie and based on the popular Mattel doll has grossed a total of $811,024,676. This makes it the third highest-grossing film of 2023, behind only "Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 " ($845 million) and "Super Mario Bros. The movie" ($1.35 billion).

However, it could soon catch up with the Marvel movie as, Deadline reports. If it continues at current projections, "Barbie" would reach $1 billion between Sunday and Monday.
