Hawaii releases names of 388 missing after Maui fires

Authorities hope the public can help locate people whose whereabouts remain unknown.

Maui County published a list with the names of the people who are still missing after the devastating fires that have claimed more than a hundred lives so far.

According to the compilation made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), there are 388 people whose whereabouts remain unknown. The list was published in an attempt to find people with help from the public.

The Maui Police Department needs the public’s help in providing information on anyone who is reported unaccounted for and whose name is on this list, but know the person can be accounted for. If you recognize a name on the list and know the person to be safe, or if you have additional information about the person that may help locate them, please contact the FBI,” the Maui County statement said.

In addition to those missing, officials reported that there are still about a thousand names that remain on the FBI’s provisional and unconfirmed list of missing persons. However, the FBI said it is working to validate the names.

Maui County explained that the newly released list includes only those for whom the first name, last name and verified contact information of the person who reported the disappearance could be obtained.

“Once those names come out, it can and will cause pain for folks whose loved ones are listed. This is not an easy thing to do, but we want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to make this investigation as complete and thorough as possible,” said Police Chief John Pelletier.
