George Santos resigns from two House committees

The Republican lawmaker was under fire for lying about his educational background and on his résumé.

George Santos, a Republican representative from New York, is resigning as a member of the House Small Business Committee as well as the Science, Space and Technology Committee. He announced this to his party colleagues in a private meeting. What was not specified is whether he will resign from his position as representative, as requested by members of the Republican Party.

Shortly after the midterm elections, rumors began to surface about Santos and his lies. Days later, he acknowledged that he made false claims about his educational background and work experience during the election campaign. On Dec. 30, the Nassau County district attorney, whom Santos represents, singled him out for "numerous fabrications and inconsistencies" and opened an investigation against him.

His lies did not stop there. On Jan. 5, Santos' office stated that the representative-elect was sworn into office, but that turned out not to be true either.

What remains to be seen is whether he will eventually give up his seat in the House. According to a Newsday/Sienna College poll, 78% of registered voters in New York's District 3 want Santos to resign from the role.
