(AFP) Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro, who had been under house arrest since August, was jailed on Saturday on remand, one of his lawyers and sources close to the case told AFP.
Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years in prison for having conspired to prevent the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after losing the 2022 election.
"He was imprisoned but I don't know the reason," said lawyer Celso Vilardi.
Sources close to the case clarified that the detention is preventive and not the execution of his sentence.
In a statement, the Federal Police said it had "complied with a request for preventive detention in compliance with a decision of the Supreme Federal Court." The statement did not mention the former president by name.
For failure to comply with precautionary measures, Bolsonaro has been under preventive house arrest since August at his home in a luxury condominium in Brasília and is monitored electronically.
The former president governed Brazil between 2019 and 2022.
