British King Charles III landed in Ottawa on Monday for a historic visit to mark the reopening of the Canadian Parliament. It is a visit that is also seen as a show of support following President Donald Trump's comments to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.
The monarch and head of state of Canada, a member of the Commonwealth, was greeted on the airport tarmac by the new prime minister, Mark Carney, who an hour earlier called the visit a "historic honor, commensurate with the challenges" facing the North American country.
Normally, the throne speech is delivered by the governor general, who represents the British Crown in Canada. This speech, the highlight of the 24-hour royal visit to the capital, Ottawa, will detail the priorities of Carney's new center-left government.

On May 6, Carney expressed at the White House that his country "will never be for sale," in response to the U.S. president, who listed to him the "formidable advantages" for Canadians of joining in a "wonderful marriage."
Charles' visit will be his 20th to Canada, but his first since he became king in September 2022.
