Turkish authorities reported that a powerful 6.2-magnitude quake with an epicenter in the Sea of Marmara shook the nearby city of Istanbul on Wednesday, no casualties have been reported thus far.
According to the national disaster management agency AFAD and Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, "an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 has occurred off Silivri, in the Sea of Marmara," shortly before 13H00 local time (10H00 GMT). That locality is located west of the megalopolis of Istanbul.
At least two tremors, within seconds of each other, were felt in all neighborhoods of the city of 16 million inhabitants.
Thousands of people took to the streets in panic, AFP journalists reported.
For the moment, the authorities have not reported damage to property or casualties.
