The new Italian government decided to keep the titles "mother" and "father" on children's identity cards even for same-sex couples. The new administration led by Giorgia Meloni will go back to using these titles after a ruling issued by a civil court in Rome in November asked to change it to the conventional woke titles of "parent 1" and "parent 2.”

Last month, the court ruled in favor of two mothers, legal and adoptive, who wanted to change the title of "mother" and "father" on their children's documents. The judge asked the Ministry of the Interior to change the software that produces the documents. The ruling attacked regulations passed in 2019 by then Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini, which in turn repealed a law that allowed "parent 1" and "parent 2" to be listed on minors' documents.

The change from "mother" and "father" to "parent 1" and "parent 2" will only apply to the couple that appealed the law and not to all Italian families. In the opinion of the Italian government, this is a great victory:

"Mom and dad, the most beautiful and painful words in the world, do not touch"

Matteo Salvini, Italy’s current Minister of Transport and former Minister of the Interior who protected the titles of "mother" and "father” under his mandate, welcomed the government's decision:

The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Family explained that both “mother” and “father” will be listed on the identity card. They reminded the public that homosexual couples can always appeal, just like the couple who took the rule to court did.
