Davis Cup: Czech Republic knocks out the United States and advances to the finals

The Czech Republic defeated the United States 3-2 on Saturday in Prague and qualified for the Davis Cup Finals, after a tie decided in the fifth match. Jiri Lehecka became the local hero by defeating Learner Tien 6-3, 7-5.

The United States had taken the lead in doubles, but the series turned around when Jakub Mensik defeated Ben Shelton 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Shelton came into the tie after reaching the U.S. Open final, but was unable to win either of his two singles matches.

"The Davis Cup requires teamwork. I wouldn't have been able to play the final match if the rest of the team hadn't worked as hard as they did," Lehecka said after securing the victory.

The United States, winner of 32 Davis Cup titles, will once again be left out of the running for the trophy. The U.S. team has not won the competition since 2007.

Canada will also be in Bologna

Canada defeated France 3-2 in Quebec and also earned a spot in the Finals. World No. 5 Felix Auger-Aliassime clinched the decisive point by defeating Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.

The Czech Republic, Canada, Austria and South Korea joined defending champion Italy among the teams qualifying for the final phase, which will be held in Bologna from Nov. 24 to 29.

Spain put Chile on the ropes after taking a 2-0 lead in Santiago, while Great Britain took the same lead against Ecuador. The South American teams need to win their remaining matches to stay in contention.

Brazil teturns to the elite

Brazil secured its return to the qualifying rounds for the 2027 Finals after defeating Switzerland 3-0 in Rio de Janeiro. João Fonseca made his return from injury and contributed to the Brazilian victory.

Peru also advanced to the 2027 qualifiers by defeating Paraguay 3-2, thanks to Juan Pablo Varillas' decisive victory over Hernando José Escurra, 6-3, 6-4. Colombia, on the other hand, was eliminated after losing 4-0 to the Netherlands.
