Aaron Judge catches up to the legendary DiMaggio with Trump in the stands in New York

The Republican was the first sitting president to come to Yankee Stadium since Game 3 of the 2001 World Series, when George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial pitch.

New York Yankees star Aaron Judge reached 361 career home runs Thursday, matching the legendary Joe DiMaggio, in a game attended by President Donald Trump in commemoration of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Appearing on the giant screens, the U.S. president was greeted with applause from the Yankee Stadium crowd, where he watched the pregame ceremony in remembrance of the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks.

Trump also went to the locker room to greet local ballplayers, led by Aaron Judge, before the Yankees' 9x3 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Judge had a blazing start to the game connecting with two home runs in the first three innings.

The Californian opened fire with a 126-yard first-inning homer in the opener and then hit another in the third, when the Yankees dominated by a tentative 5x1.

The 33-year-old Judge reached 361 homers in his 10 seasons with the Bronx Bombers.

With this acheivment, he equaled the legendary DiMaggio in fourth place on the list of the Yankees' greatest hitters, led by Babe Ruth (659 home runs) followed by Mickey Mantle (536) and Lou Gehrig (493).

For the season, Judge ranks fourth in the majors with 46 home runs, behind Cal Raleigh's 53 (Mariners), Kyle Schwarber's 50 (Phillies)and Shohei Ohtani's 48 (Dodgers).

The Yankees went on to lead 9x1 before the visitors made up the score with a home run by Dillon Dingler in the seventh inning and another homer by Puerto Rico's Javier Baez in the ninth after a grounder to shortstop by Venezuela's Gleyber Torres.

Trump was the first sitting president to come to Yankee Stadium since Game 3 of the 2001 World Series, when George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial pitch.

After his presence at the U.S. Open men's tennis finals caused long waits Sunday, the Yankees opened the gates earlier than usual and advised fans to be prepared for extra security measures.

Other results

The other New York team, the Mets, fell in their visit to the Philadelphia Phillies by 6x4. Dominican Juan Soto was held to one hit in his four at-bats for the Queens ninth.

Teammate and compatriot Starling Marte connected with another hit and towed in two runs.

Elsewhere, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3x2 with a hit and a run batted in by Puerto Rico's Emmanuel Rivera.

Dominican Alexander Canario hit a solo home runfor the Pirates.
