The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, number two in the ATP ranking, debuted with victory at Wimbledon 2025, although he struggled more than expected against the Italian Fabio Fognini - number 138 - in a day characterized by the intense heat in London, United Kingdom.

Alcaraz, who arrived at Wimbledon after winning his second Roland Garros, needed the fifth and final set to defeat Fognini (7-5, 6-7, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1). A match that lasted 4 hours and 27 minutes.

Since the beginning of the match, the Italian had the Spaniard in serious trouble. Alcaraz scored the first set, but Fognini took the second set after an intense tie-breaker.

In the third set, Alcaraz again took the lead. However, Fognini did not give up and managed to establish the equalizer in the fourth set.

The physical effort and the heat overcame Fognini, who ended up being defeated by Alcaraz in the fifth and final set.

With his victory, Alcaraz remains undefeated in the first round in the 18 Grand Slam tournaments he has played. In the next round he will face British player Oliver Tarvet, number 719 of the ATP ranking.

The rest of the day's highlights were the withdrawal of Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas and the defeats of Norwegian Holger Rune and Russian Daniil Medvedev against Chilean Nicolas Jarry and Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, respectively.
