More than 40 feminist organizations from around the world are calling to challenge the defeat of Melani Bergés against trans Valentina Petrillo. The Spanish athlete lost the opportunity to participate in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, after being displaced by the transsexual who had previously competed in the men's category on multiple occasions.

Bergés finished eight hundredths of a second behind Petrillo in the 200m T12 final at the World Championships last month. The result gave the Olympic berth to Petrillo.

"Different national and international women's federations, consortiums and NGOs have approached the Spanish Paralympic Committee in order to challenge Petrillo's place on the grounds that she competed with an advantage in a sporting category that does not correspond to her and claim it for the Spanish athlete Bergés," says the letter released by the Alliance Against the Erasure of Women.

The organization detailed that Petrillo used the competitive advantages derived from having developed her body with testosterone to gain a place in the competition. "This is a clear example of how women themselves are prevented from winning in their categories or aspiring to a sporting career as a consequence of transgender politics that put identity issues before the material reality on which sporting competitions are based," the document highlighted.

Petrillo had already competed several times in the men's category and even broke a national record. However, a few years ago she decided to change categories and that is when she began to displace other female competitors.

The man started his hormone treatment in 2019 and a year later he entered the women's category of the Paralympic championships in Italy in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. The trans athlete was victorious in all three races and has been gaining ground in international competitions. Now, several women have come together to express their outrage at the involvement of a person who grew up and developed as a man and maintains male genetics.

Finally, Alliance Against the Erasure of Women argued:

Other international federations, such as the International Cycling Union and World Rugby, have determined that, as recent research shows, the testosterone footprint does not disappear and male athletes retain most of their competitive advantages, even if they undergo hormone-reducing therapies.
