Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal's daughter, Ramona Sarsgaard, was arrested Wednesday during chaotic anti-Israeli protests at Columbia University, police sources said.

On Wednesday, a group of protesters attempted to blockade the university's library in New York at the height of exam season. The New York Police Department intervened and made a series of arrests.

Sarsgaard, 18, who studies at Columbia College, was fined for trespassing for participating in the protests, according to The New York Post. Along with Sarsgaard, nearly 80 other people were arrested in that riot organized by pro-Palestinian communities around the university.

University authorities said they had taken action, including suspension of some of the students who participated in the event. However, it was not clear whether the actress's daughter was among them.

Sarsgaard's role in the demonstration is surprising at first glance. Maggie Gyllenhaal, her mother, is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent on her mother's side.

The Gyllenhaal family is one of the best known names in the American film industry. Maggie Gyllenhaal is, along with her brother Jake, one of the best known faces of this Hollywood family, who is of Swedish origin.

Maggie Gyllenhaal rose to fame after participating in big productions such as "The Dark Knight," directed by Christopher Nolan, "Mona Lisa Smile," "Donnie Darko" and "Secretary."
