The vice president of the Democratic Party in Florida and deputy mayor of Coral Springs Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead at her home and authorities arrested her husband as the alleged perpetrator of the crime. Authorities reported that it is being investigated as a case of violence against women, but declined to give further information as the investigations continue.

In a single press conference, Police Chief Brad Brock reported that they had proceeded to arrest Stephen Bowen, the victim's husband, as the main suspect and that the main line of investigation was "a case of domestic violence." Brock declined to give further details.

Bowen, who had been considering a run for Congress, was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. In November last year she was appointed deputy mayor for a second one-year term. In March 2025, she was named vice chair of Voter Engagement for the Haitian-American Caucus of the Florida Democratic Party.

Environmental scientist before jumping into politics

Before beginning her political career, Bowen had worked as an environmental scientist and was part of the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

Bowen's family confirmed her passing through their accounts on social media.

"Throughout her years in public office, she led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering sense of purpose. She believed in bringing people together, listening to those she served, and working tirelessly to create positive change in her community. To us, she was a source of strength, wisdom, and love — someone who always put others before herself."
