(AFP) David Lynch, director of hits such as Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive and who became one of the benchmarks for his haunting portraits of American life, died on Thursday at the age of 78, his family announced.

"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist David Lynch," reads a statement posted on his official Facebook page.

The family does not specify the cause or place of death, but the filmmaker and screenwriter who lived in Los Angeles, suffered from pulmonary emphysema after years of heavy smoking.

The filmmaker won critical acclaim with films such as Blue Velvet (1986) and Mulholland Drive (2000). But he is perhaps best remembered for his fascinating 1990s TV series Twin Peaks, a pioneer in the genre before the streaming era.

Four-time Oscar nominee, including three times for best director, the filmmaker only took home one honorary statuette, in 2019.
